Life Long Learning
As a life long learner, I love new opportunities for growth and learning and seek them out whenever possible. Below is a list of conferences and workshops that I have attended through my previous work experience as an Educational Assistant as well as during my practicum placements.
Professional Development Workshops:
Animated Literacy
I attended the Animated literacy workshop in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Animated Literacy
is a comprehensive, researched based, multi-sensory approach to reading, writing, and oral language instruction that moves students from the earliest stages of literacy to fluency and independence in reading and writing at a third grade level. This was a program that I was using within the Kindergarten class I was working with as an educational assistant.
Competency based Learning
In this workshop I was exposed to the 10 cross-curricular competencies. Cross-curricular competencies are an interrelated set of attitudes, skills and knowledge that are drawn upon and applied to a particular context for successful learning and living. During this workshop I was informed of some valuable online resources that I have been using for my lesson planning within my first practicum placement. These resources are A.A.C and the Online Resource Centre through Learn Alberta.ca. These websites contain valuable lesson plans and assessment tools that are linked to the Alberta Program of Studies.
Balanced Literacy Workshop
In this PD session I learned about the Moving Up with Literacy Place program that is run through Scholastic. With Moving Up students will be using comprehension strategies to access texts at levels appropriate for them in forms such as maps, brochures, books, posters, and game instructions. They will be writing for a variety of purposes and in a variety of forms, developing their oral language skills, and learning questioning techniques. This was a great program that I would be interested in implementing when I have my own classroom.
