Statement of beliefs and values
I believe in the importance of teaching both the curriculum and the hidden curriculum to my students. Within the hidden curriculum there are important life lessons that I believe are equally as important to learn. There are many personal and social skills necessary for children to learn that are not specifically listed within the curriculum.
I believe that teaching should be an open-minded experience. As a teacher I strive to encourage creativity within my classroom and be sure to nurture the creativity of each of my students.
I believe that all students have the potential to learn. I need to be aware that all children learn differently and at different rates. It is my responsibility as a teacher to vary my teaching styles to ensure that I present the information effectively to accommodate the individual learning styles that will exist in my classroom.
I believe that all students have the right to a safe, risk free and positive learning environment. I want to ensure that my students feel comfortable in their surroundings and feel confident to be themselves and make mistakes that they can learn from. In order to create a positive environment for my students I will make sure that all students in my classroom are treated with the same level of respect, both by me and by all other students in the room.
I believe that classroom management is crucial to education. Classroom management should be set in place from the beginning of the school year and maintained until the end. Developing classroom management begins with creating rapport and setting rules and expectations for students to follow. It is important to continue classroom management throughout the school year to maintain a sense of classroom community. I believe that through positive and effective classroom management strategies, I will be able to create a positive learning environment for my students. This will allow my students to gain a deeper understanding of what my expectations are for them in my classroom. I strive to continuously build on my classroom management strategies so they can constantly be updated and improved.
I believe very strongly about incorporating parents into children’s learning. Learning isn’t an individual process; it requires scaffolding and support. It is a social process that is reinforced through student, parent and teacher collaboration. I value the importance of ensuring that parents know what is expected of their children in my classroom, and how they are performing both academically and socially.
I believe in the commitment towards lifelong learning. I want to ensure that I keep up with new information and technology as it becomes available and be willing to adapt to change, as lifelong learning is a necessity for both my students and I in the 21st century.
